Believe in God or not?

Something that really annoys me and I feel quite agitated about is what I used to be. If anyone asked if I was a christian I would say "yes". But now I look back and what made me a christian then? The fact that I believed in God? But did I really, I certainly didn't live like it.
I realised now I bullied other people, I hurt other people. Not all the time but I did and never had a care for it.

More recently it's something totally possessing me.
One should establish whether they believe in God or not.
Then they should live by it.
How do you live by it? By God's word or otherwise you would establish your own way.

This sort of thinking has certainly been challenging me lately. Many people go to church, sometimes you wonder when it will become something more than a routine. I know that Sunday morning was the only time I gave God and even then I mucked around a lot.

Considering Jesus two top commandments:
-Love the lord your God with all your heart, and all your mind, and all your soul
-Love your neighbour as yourself

There is no way such a task is easy. But certainly progress towards this is better than accepting it as impossible or making none. If I really believe in God, I realise now I must give my life to God. Otherwise what am I doing but wasting my time.

I think this is also a key reason why Christianity can be so off putting to others. Outsiders see hypocrisy. One preaching about loving others but seeing the opposite. I just hope that I won't be seen like that and that I truly will be what God calls me to be, otherwise why am I doing it.

Before writing this I was thinking I must make sure this is not so condemning to others, because I know that would be hypocritical. So I decided to write it as much as possible about myself and I hope that it might help you to think about your own self.

a very good post. I think though its takes more than believeing in a God to be a Christian. because
1. you need to believe in the christian God as he reveals what he is in the bibel
2. decide to follow him - you can believe God exists and not follow him.
3. realise the bible says the only way to get to God is not not do it yourself but to rely in Jesus - as it says in the bible - the cross to get you right

I heard 'the reason for God' by tim keller is a excellant book if your unsure about God. very non confrontational but explains things well. I have heard I plan to read it sometime

Gods a Myth

Astrid, I have a small snippet of advice for you. Maybe you should learn to focus on your spelling and grammar, you know, things that matter in the real world, rather than trying to obey a facade because you can't find real meaning in your own pitiful existence.

Thank you for the dear advice I know that in that regard I am shocking. But then I really don't see using proper spelling and grammar as a way to add meaning to my 'pitiful' existence it will merely just be a another pitiful thing I do. By the way this is a blog comment not a honours thesis the quality and effort will differ.

btw wether I was to believe in God or not was not choosing something to add meaning but a mind battle of what is true. Was there a God or not. After looking at some of the science of it and some specific things that happened in my life I truely believe God exists. The big bang for example took something outside time or space and scientists haven't come up with an alternative adequate answer. This is just one example.

do you believe anon in any spiritual realm or is every thing just material

Are you serious? you found justification for god in science.

Christ you christians are stupider than you look.

Hey Anonymous we will pray for you.
What makes you feel Christians are false,or stupid?

Please keep your language in check, I have no choice but to delete can't let things get out of hand :)

Oh here is what Anonymous had to say, with the language removed:

"Oh yes please pray for me, what a world of good that will do. I find christians ridiculously stupid, in particualr Astrid, using supposed scientific justification for God.

Pathetic.

I bet you also dispel any thoughts of evolution? "

Oh I am just so to cut to the heart I really don't know if I quite have the will to live any more. I don't really know why you wish to be derogatory- other atheists I have known have had just a tad more respect for my beliefs. But I'll be a fool for Christ if need be. Any way just to correct a few things.

1. My faith in God is not entirely based on science it is to a degree something spiritual to believe in what is unseen. For me it was more that science should initicate there is a creator and a God if that is the truth and I came to the conclusion it is rather than against.

2. You are wrong in your bet that I disregard anything to do with evolution. I believe evolution occurs that is why antibiotics stop working - bacteria mutate and spread their mutations to others. I have actually learn't the evolution theory at uni in zoology. I simply do not personally believe that evolution created phyla - categories of animals and so on.

There is a number of problems with the evolution theory
1. There is very little chance of molecules arranging themselves to form life spontaneously
2. The issue of ireducible complexity - the fact that the eye needs 3 complex parts to work - how did those complex parts form by random mutations in natural selection these molecules would be useless for a long time. The counter theory is that the each of the parts are used for something else like an enzyme and then change function - I do not find this sufficient. This is not also eyes but also bacteria flaggella.
3. fossils don't always match the evolution theory - there are not alot of specie intermediates found. One way to explain this away is that changing a few genes can cause big changes but I don't think that suffieciayly explains it.
4. Darwin said that if cells were complex his theory would fail - I have studied aspects of cells and they are incredibly complex.

These don't in it self disprove evolution as in to create the world but weaken the theory. I have no idea how much you know but it could be good to consider both sides.

So instead you're a hypocrite, picking and choosing which parts you choose to believe. Which parts are convenient to believe right?

I supposed you also wish all homosexuals and unwed mothers to eternal damnation. Or is that not a part that was convenient for you to follow.

Also, what the hell does initicate mean? Are you now inventing words to justify your hypocritical existence.

You actually are even more pathetic than I first thought.

It is up to God to judge not us.He spent a lot of time ministering to those in need.He spent a great deal of time with the down and out.
Sadly you seem to like to pull people apart and judge them.
What if Astrid was someone who had a reason why they have difficulty spelling correctly.Without knowing this person you are attacking them?
Anonymous you are now being prayed for by people all over the world. We will not stop till you invite God into your life.

Initicate meant indicate - I'm sure you could work that out but you just wished to be finicky.

I'm not sure how my beliefs are hypocritical. I probably do pick and choose my beliefs. But the picking and choosing is due to what I think is believable not what is convenient or easy.

Often with a theory or a system there are items that are true and helpful and parts that aren't so I try to evaluate what is useful and true instead of accepting a whole system without thought. Especially with a theory (evolution is a theory) as scientifically it can always do with refinement to fit better with what we know to be experimentally true.

As for your comment 'I supposed you also wish all homosexuals and unwed mothers to eternal damnation. Or is that not a part that was convenient for you to follow.' (Btw it supposed should be suppose to portray present tense - grammar)

I do not wish this as this is not what the bible says. I believe the bible is God's word and gives information on what he wants us to do and therefore the guide on Christian belief

In the bible it says

1 tim 2:3-43
This is good, and(C) it is pleasing in the sight of(D) God our Savior, 4who desires(E) all people to be saved and(F) to come to(G) the knowledge of the truth.

Exe 33:11
11Tell them that as surely as I am the living LORD God, I don't like to see wicked people die. I enjoy seeing them turn from their sins and live. So if the Israelites want to live, they must stop sinning and turn back to me.

Hence since God does not want anyone to perish nor do I. In fact when Jesus was on earth he hung out with sinners like prostitutes and loved them. This is because God sees none as good as no one can live up to the perfect standard of always doing the right thing for the right reasons. If Jesus was harsh on anyone it was the respectable religious people who thought they were right with God because they did all the right respectable things but cared little for God or in loving other people ( a hypocrite).

In my experience in the churches that I know and are part of people having been loving towards single mothers going to extra lengths to help them out . I do not therefore believe your above comment because it’s not Christian however I understand that some ‘Christian’ groups may give that idea due to being very judgmental.
